Waterhouse-Friderichsen syndrome [DOID:9931]
A meningococcal meningitis described as an adrenal gland hypofunction disease functionally, resulting from a meningococcal infection caused by the bacterium Neisseria meningitidis, which is characterized by hemorrhages in the adrenal glands, usually observed in severe cases of meningitis. Infection can also be caused by Streptococcus pneumoniae infection. Staphylococcus aureus has recently also been implicated in pediatric WFS. The symptoms include fever, rigors, vomiting, headache, rash, hypotension and septic shock.
